The United States government has demonstrated its commitment to global health by donating 10,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine to Nigeria to assist in the fight against monkeypox.
The donation, which was officially handed over on Tuesday, August 27, in Abuja, comes at a critical time as Nigeria struggles with an ongoing public health crisis.
The Jynneos vaccine, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is specifically designed to prevent smallpox and monkeypox in adults aged 18 and older who are at risk of infection.

This act of generosity by the U.S. government is seen as crucial support for Nigeria’s efforts to combat the disease, especially given the country’s challenging economic situation.
During the handover ceremony, Prof. Muhammad Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, expressed deep gratitude for the donation, highlighting the strong spirit of cooperation between the two nations.
“This vaccine will be of great help to us,” Pate stated, emphasizing the federal government’s dedication to improving public health.
As Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reports 40 confirmed cases of monkeypox out of 830 suspected cases nationwide, this donation by the U.S. serves as a timely intervention.
The gesture also sets a positive example for other nations to extend support to countries facing public health challenges, reinforcing the importance of global solidarity in times of crisis.
