Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a surprising claim, stating that Russia will support U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming elections.
Speaking at an economic forum in Vladivostok on Thursday, Putin commented that it is “the choice of the American people” but hinted at Russia’s preference for Harris, claiming that his nation backed her as a Democratic nominee.
The statement comes in the midst of new U.S. sanctions against Russian attempts to manipulate public opinion ahead of the November vote.
Putin, referencing former President Joe Biden, said, “He was removed from the race, but he advised all his supporters to support Ms. Harris. So we will do it as well; we will root for her,” followed by applause from the audience.
Putin also stated humorously on Harris’s “expressive and infectious laugh,” suggesting that she might be a less confrontational figure for Russia compared to former President Donald Trump, who imposed several sanctions during his term.

However, political analysts and viewers have speculated that Putin’s statement may have been laced with sarcasm, considering Russia’s history of favorable relations with Trump.
