Three young men tragically lost their lives, and others were injured after a horrific collision involving two cars on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos State on Sunday, September 22.
The crash, which occurred around 1 a.m., was reportedly caused by an 18-year-old unlicensed driver.
According to witnesses, eight people were involved in the accident, with two of the victims dying instantly, while another passed away shortly after being pulled from the wreckage.
“The driver was about 18 years old and without a driver’s license,” a witness on X revealed.
Inspite the severity of the crash, both drivers, including the 18-year-old, survived unharmed.
However, instead of prioritizing the injured and deceased, the police allegedly arrested the survivors, sparking outrage among onlookers who pleaded with officers to focus on transporting the victims to hospitals or the mortuary.
Reacting to the incident, Lagos State Police Command PRO, Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified that the police had taken the injured and deceased to the hospital, stating,
“Unfortunately, three were certified dead, and the police took their bodies to Yaba mortuary.
The police equally took the driver at fault to the hospital for medical attention and left him in the custody of his family.”
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
