Female CJN Justice Kekere-Ekun Recommended as Next Chief Justice of Nigeria

The National Judicial Council has recommended Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Justice Kekere-Ekun’s recommendation marks a milestone for women in the judiciary, as she becomes the first female CJN in years.

The NJC’s 106th meeting, presided over by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, made the recommendation to President Bola Tinubu.

This was seen in a statement made by the NJC director of information, Soji Oye.

He said, “This is imperative as Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will formally bow out of office as the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria next week Thursday, August 22, 2024.”

Justice Kekere-Ekun is known for her accountability and transparency, which is expected to bring positive change to the judiciary.

It is said that her appointment is a testament to her exceptional leadership qualities and dedication to upholding the rule of law.

So also the NJC also recommended 27 other candidates from all other states such as (Kwara, Ondo, Benue, Kaduna, and Rivers States ) for appointment as judges of state courts and a candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of FCT, Abuja.

Her recommendation is a significant step forward for gender equality in the judiciary and a demonstration of the government’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

The NJC’s recommendation is expected to be approved by President Tinubu, paving the way for Justice Kekere-Ekun’s appointment as the next CJN.

This development marks a new era for the judiciary, as Justice Kekere-Ekun brings a fresh perspective and commitment to transparency and accountability.
