UNICAL Graduation List Features Unexpected Name: Bread Seller

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has revealed that the University of Calabar (UNICAL) once included a bread seller on its graduation list for mandatory national service, raising serious concerns about fraudulent mobilization practices.

The NYSC, in an effort to always maintain the integrity of the program, has demobilized 54 unqualified individuals from UNICAL who were improperly listed for the one-year service.

Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, the Director General of NYSC, disclosed on Friday that among those demobilized, 19 individuals who had registered online for mobilization were prevented from entering the service.

Additionally, four other Certificates of National Service were withheld from other individuals involved in the fraud. Ahmed emphasized that these illegal graduates would face prosecution, highlighting the agency’s commitment to upholding standards.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL took proactive steps by reporting the discrepancies to the NYSC, leading to the invalidation of certificates for those not genuinely qualified.

The Pro-Chancellor of the university, DIG Udom Ekpoudom (retd.), praised the NYSC’s efforts to expose the fraud, vowing to take action against the staff responsible for mobilizing fake graduates.

Ahmed also called on employers to verify the authenticity of NYSC certificates presented by job seekers to prevent the hiring of unqualified individuals.
