China Sentences Ex-Football Official to 11 Years

China has sentenced Li Yuyi, the former vice president of the Chinese Football Association, to 11 years in prison for corruption, demonstrating the country’s unwavering stance against bribery and abuse of power.

The verdict, delivered by a Chinese court on August 19, found Li guilty of accepting bribes and gifts in exchange for favors during his tenure at the Chinese Football Association and the Chinese Football Association Super League Company from 2004 to 2021.

In addition to the prison sentence, Li was fined 1 million yuan ($139,579.03), furthering the government’s commitment to curbing corruption regardless of status.

The court’s ruling is part of a broader suppression of corruption within China’s football establishment, which has seen several high-ranking officials prosecuted in recent years.

Earlier this year, in March, one of the most significant corruption scandals in the country led to the conviction of a former chief of China’s soccer association, who was sentenced to life in prison for accepting bribes worth over $10 million.

These stringent measures are a clear signal that, under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, the Communist Party remains resolute in its fight against corruption, aiming to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their rank or influence, are held accountable.

Regardless of these efforts, corruption remains a persistent issue, but the government’s continued actions reflect a determination to enforce equality and justice across the board.

The conviction of high-profile figures like Li Yuyi sends a powerful message to both the privileged and the less fortunate that the law applies to everyone.
