2027: APC, PDP at odds over Jonathan’s potential return

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed its support for the potential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 presidential race, citing growing dissatisfaction with the current administration under President Bola Tinubu.

The endorsement follows a period of economic turmoil that has left many Nigerians questioning the direction of the nation’s leadership.

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, who was a key figure during Jonathan’s previous administration, emphasized the former president’s experience and capability to revive the country’s struggling economy.

Mohammed stated, “If you are talking about a southern presidency in 2027, we should be looking at one who has enjoyed one term and will probably give Nigerians hope and prosperity.”

He added that Jonathan’s previous tenure was marked by economic stability, including single-digit inflation and a stabilized foreign exchange rate.

However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the PDP’s support for Jonathan as premature and unfounded.

Bala Ibrahim, the National Director of Publicity for the APC, responded by asserting that the current administration still has a significant portion of its mandate to fulfill.

He remarked, “For us to start talking about 2027 is not only premature, but a calculation that is doomed.”

Ibrahim also expressed confidence that the APC would be able to field a strong candidate when the time comes, while suggesting that the PDP’s move signals desperation.

However, speculation continues, and it remains uncertain whether Jonathan will heed the call to return to the political arena.
