Five Dead as Canoe Capsizes in Jigawa State

Five lives were tragically lost after a canoe capsized in Gantsa town, Buji Local Government Area of Jigawa State, on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.

The boat, carrying five passengers, was attempting to navigate a flood-submerged road when it overturned, leading to the immediate drowning of all on board.

The incident, confirmed by the State Police Command, highlights the ongoing risks faced by residents in the area due to inadequate infrastructure and a lack of necessary safety measures.

“The canoe capsized and instantly drowned,” the statement from DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, spokesperson of the State Police Command, revealed.

In spite of the quick response from local divers and police, who rushed to the scene in a bid to rescue the victims, all five were pronounced dead upon arrival at Gantsa Cottage Hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Lurwanu Adamu, Idris Abubakar, Fiddausi Dahiru, Ramla Nura, and Usman Adamu, all hailing from Malamawar Gangare, Birnin Kudu LGA. After that, their bodies were sent to their relatives for final resting places.

This tragic event highlights the critical need for government action in Jigawa State, particularly in ensuring safer travel routes and emergency response services in flood-prone areas.

The lack of infrastructure, including well-maintained roads and accessible emergency services, continues to put the lives of residents at significant risk.
