Onyeka Onwenu to Be Buried Today in a Private Ceremony, Fulfilling Her Wish for a Simple and Quiet Farewell

Nigerian music icon, Onyeka Onwenu, known as the “Elegant Stallion,” will be laid to rest today, Friday, August 30, in Lagos.

Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, had collapsed after performing at a birthday party for Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

Her passing at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, shocked the nation, but her family is honoring her wish for a simple and quiet burial.

According to details released by her family, the funeral service will take place at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, followed by a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi.

The Service of Songs is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon, with the burial ceremony set for 2 to 4 p.m. In a 2021 opinion piece, Onwenu expressed her desire for a modest funeral, stating,

“Do it quickly, quietly, and privately.”

This sentiment reflects her lifelong preference for simplicity and her wish not to inconvenience others, including her children, in death.

Onwenu’s request for a quiet burial serves as a poignant reminder of the value of humility and simplicity, even in moments of great loss.

Her family’s adherence to her wishes demonstrates respect for her legacy, urging others to consider that true honor lies not in grandiose displays but in living—and dying—with grace and modesty.

As the nation bids farewell to this legendary artist, her message resonates: life and death need not be marked by extravagance to hold deep meaning.
