Arrest by Proxy is Unprofessional and Illegal,” Says Nigeria Police Spokesperson, Adejobi

The Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has reiterated that arresting individuals by proxy is unprofessional, illegal, and unacceptable. 

 This practice involves detaining a close relative or associate of a suspect as leverage to apprehend the actual offender. 

 Adejobi emphasized that this approach is not only unjust but also goes against the principles of proper law enforcement. 

 In a post shared on his X account, Adejobi stated, “You can’t arrest the mother in place of her son for an offense she knows nothing about.” 

 He added that such actions reflect poorly on the professionalism of the police force and undermine public trust in law enforcement. 

 Adejobi’s comments highlight the need for continuous education and training of police officers to prevent such unethical practices.

 Critics argue that while Adejobi’s statement is timely, it also underscores the necessity for more rigorous training programs within the police force.

These programs should ensure that officers are fully aware of legal standards and the importance of upholding human rights. 

 The government is also encouraged to implement schemes that regularly update law enforcement officials on best practices, aiming to reduce incidents where innocent individuals are wrongfully detained in any state and, if found, will be dealt with thoroughly.
