Ukraine has developed a new incendiary weapon known as “dragon drones” that releases molten metal onto enemy positions, a potential game-changer in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Videos shared by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on platforms like Telegram show the drones flying low and spraying a mixture called thermite—an aluminum powder and iron oxide combination that burns at temperatures reaching 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,200 degrees Celsius)—over Russian-held areas.
While the weapon offers Ukraine a new means of countering Russian troops, experts have warned of the potential dangers, including the risk of accidental harm to civilians or unintended damage to Ukraine’s own infrastructure, which can end up being life-threatening.
Thermite, which has been used in wars since World War I, can burn through metal, leaving little protection for those caught in its path.

The United Nations has long raised concerns over incendiary weapons, stating that their use raises humanitarian issues, particularly when they result in unnecessary suffering or endanger civilians.
Given the powerful and destructive nature of these weapons, it is crucial that Ukraine exercise caution to avoid unintended consequences and ensure compliance with international humanitarian laws.
The development of such weapons could increase tensions globally and lead to escalations in warfare that will not be handled in a hurry.
