The former military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), has raised concerns over the worsening economic hardship in Nigeria, calling on the government to act swiftly to alleviate the suffering of its citizens.
Speaking at his residence in Minna during a birthday visit from the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, Abdulsalami emphasized that Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities like food and transportation amid rising fuel prices and increasing school fees.
“The hardship in the land is getting out of control,” Abdulsalami said, stressing that many Nigerians can no longer afford three square meals.
He urged the federal, state, and local governments to introduce immediate measures to ease the economic burden on citizens.
“Nigerians are suffering,” he stated, adding that solutions must be found to cushion the hardship.
Abdulsalami also revealed that he belongs to a forum that has made recommendations to the government, emphasizing that palliatives alone are insufficient.

Instead, he urged the government to “flood the communities with food” and sell it at lower prices to make it more accessible.
“We have passed these recommendations to the government; we hope they will implement them,” he concluded.
