The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to remain calm following a series of earth tremors recorded in the area that were recorded recently.
According to a statement by the NGSA’s Director-General, Professor Olusegun Ige, the tremors have been monitored closely and found to be of low intensity, posing minimal risk to the environment, which in a way calms people down but still fears people.
“Preliminary analysis shows that the sources of these ground motions are less than 5 km away from the NGSA-5 monitoring station. The tremors, while increasing in intensity from September 13 to 16, are weak to light, ranging from III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale,” the statement read.
The NGSA emphasized that the tremors are a result of accumulated stress along identified fault lines, with most epicenters located around the Mpape and Katampe areas of the state of Abuja.
Residents have been advised not to panic but to stay informed and alert by tuning into relevant stations for updates so as to maintain rules and regulations set aside to ensure proper safety for this period of time.
“The agency is keeping close monitoring of the situation and will provide necessary updates.
This is a good step by the government to ensure the safety of residents, particularly those in Abuja,” Ige noted, further encouraging the public to remain conscious of their surroundings and potential road cracks that are cited around
