In a decisive move, the US House of Representatives unanimously passed a bipartisan bill on Friday, September 20, ensuring that presidential and vice presidential candidates receive the same level of Secret Service protection as sitting leaders.
The legislation follows growing concerns over the safety of major political figures after two recent assassination attempts, including one targeting former President Donald Trump.

The bill, which passed 405-0, mandates that candidates such as Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris receive the same security detail as President Joe Biden.
The “Enhanced Presidential Security Act”, introduced by Reps. Mike Lawler and Ritchie Torres, seeks to bolster security efforts as the nation approaches the November election.
“We as a federal government have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of these candidates,” said Lawler.
He further stressed that the election “should be decided by voters at the ballot box—not by an assassin’s bullet.”
While the House passed the bill overwhelmingly, it remains unclear how the Senate will proceed.
Talks are ongoing about potentially increasing Secret Service funding to support these heightened security measures, with President Biden and other congressional leaders calling for swift action.
