Nigerians have taken to social media to express their frustration over the soaring cost of flight tickets, leaving the once-bustling Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos is almost empty.
A traveler on X formerly Twitter shared a photo of the airport’s waiting area, which was nearly deserted on the morning of September 24.
“Empty airport this morning.
Return ticket Lagos to Abuja is 143k,” the user wrote, highlighting the sharp increase in air travel costs.
Other users on the platform echoed similar concerns, with one lamenting,
“Return ticket Lagos to Benin 320k.
Money wey people dey take go London before. Nigeria is in dire straits.”
The steep rise in ticket prices, a consequence of the country’s economic instability and high fuel costs, has pushed air travel out of reach for many Nigerians, particularly the middle class.
The drastic decline in airport traffic underscores the growing financial strain on citizens.

With no salary adjustments to match the rising cost of living, Nigerians are forced to spend more on transportation, leaving less for basic needs.
