Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has claimed that Nigeria has saved N5.4 trillion since the removal of the fuel subsidy, a decision made by President Bola Tinubu as his very first mission.
Speaking during the 64th National Day celebration in Abeokuta, Abiodun emphasized that this saving is crucial for the country’s economic survival, as the Federal Government’s 2024 budget stands at N6.7 trillion every year to fund all of the activities that will occur in the nation.
“Without this move, the subsidy would have crippled the economy,” Abiodun said, urging Nigerians to see the long-term benefits of the removal, but its mission is not really being proven.
However, critics argue that this narrative is merely a tactic to buy time for the government while the population continues to struggle with the economic aftermath of the subsidy removal and that the value is yet to be enjoyed.
Inflation has worsened living conditions, and many question how the government plans to use the saved funds.
One critic stated, “If there’s money saved, what has it been used for? People are suffering, yet there’s no visible impact.”
However, in spite of the backlash, Governor Abiodun urged citizens to remain patient and avoid destructive protests, which he warned could lead to looting and vandalism, which will take time to recover.
He called for constructive engagement with the government, adding,
“This administration is working towards an inclusive and better tomorrow, but it requires resilience, prayer, and perseverance.” He stated if they want a great change and a bright future.
