18-Year-Old Sentenced to One Year in Prison for Arson and Theft in Kwara

An 18-year-old boy, Olawumi Ayomide, has been sentenced to one year of imprisonment without the option of a fine by a Kwara State Magistrate Court for arson and theft.

The court, presided over by Magistrate M.A. Yahaya, found Ayomide guilty of breaking into a residential building in Ilorin, stealing various items, and setting the house on fire in an attempt to evade capture.

The incident took place on September 25, 2024, at Afenifere Community, Ilorin South LGA.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) apprehended Ayomide at the scene and handed him over for prosecution.

In a statement, the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Ayoola Michael Shola, said,

“During the invasion, the suspect stole foodstuffs, groceries, and clothing and set the building ablaze as a diversion when he was about to be caught.”

The court, recognizing the severity of the crime, sentenced Ayomide to serve his time at the Mandala Correctional Centre.

The NSCDC Kwara State Commandant, Dr. Umar J.G. Mohammed, emphasized the importance of upholding safety in the state, stating,

“This sentence is a reminder of the Corps’ commitment to tackling criminal activities and ensuring the security of all citizens.”

Some have expressed sympathy, attributing the boy’s actions to hunger, while others argue that firm corrective measures are necessary to prevent future crimes.
