Police Fire Teargas at Abuja Protesters, Sparking Distrust in Authorities

Police officers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) fired teargas at protesters during the “Fearless in October” protest held on October 1 2024 in Abuja.

The protest, which aimed to address issues of bad governance, high living costs, and the need for diaspora voting, took place in the Utako area, where demonstrators waved the Nigerian Green-White-Green flag and held placards with various demands.

However, the peaceful gathering was disrupted when law enforcement officers fired teargas to disperse the crowd.

Videos shared online show protesters fleeing in panic as clouds of teargas enveloped the area.

The actions of the police have raised concerns among citizens about their role in protecting public safety.

Many protesters believe the force’s actions only reinforce distrust in authorities.

“They’re supposed to protect us, not harm us.

This just proves the rumors about them, right?” stated one protester, who claimed that the police might have been sent by the government to suppress their voices.

This incident has further intensified calls for transparency and accountability within both the government and its law enforcement agencies.

Some protesters have expressed that such aggressive measures only strengthen their resolve to continue voicing their concerns about governance, despite the risks involved.
