The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned Nigerians to hold the Federal Government responsible if they are forced to embark on another strike because they have refused to listen to their cry.
In a statement from ASUU’s Nsukka Zone, the union highlighted the government’s failure to address key issues affecting public universities, including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, unpaid earned academic allowances, and poor funding, which means there is no motivation to work.
ASUU-Nsukka Zonal Coordinator Raphael Amokaha said,
“The government has not demonstrated sincerity in dealing with our union and has not proven to the people that they are the right people they have chosen.
However, in spite of multiple efforts to avoid industrial action, they remain nonchalant.”
He also recalled how ASUU was forced into a prolonged strike in 2022 and warned that similar conditions are unfolding due to the government’s inaction.
Meanwhile, the union urged the government to take education seriously, arguing that quality education is essential for the future of Nigeria’s youth.
“If the government frustrates our union into industrial action, they must be held solely responsible for the crisis,”
Amokaha emphasized, noting that ASUU has consistently sought peaceful resolutions but has been met with indifference.
