Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua narrowly avoided a driving ban just days before his fight with Daniel Dubois.
The 34-year-old British-Nigerian boxer, who lost the IBF heavyweight title contest on September 21, had pleaded guilty to a speeding charge four days prior.
Joshua admitted to driving 44mph in a 30mph zone, attributing his actions to “physical and mental fatigue” from an intense training camp.
He expressed concerns over losing his driving license, as it could impact his ability to reach remote training locations.
In spite of his guilty plea, Joshua was not banned from driving but was fined £1,167 and given four additional penalty points, bringing his total to seven.
In his letter of mitigation, Joshua stated, “I fully accept responsibility for my actions on May 29, 2024, and deeply regret my failure to adhere to the speed limits.
I recognize that such circumstances do not justify speeding, and I deeply regret allowing myself to make this error.”
Moreover, Joshua stressed the potential consequences of a driving ban on his career, citing the importance of being able to travel to and from training sessions.
UK Magistrate Rosalyn Hayles sentenced him behind closed doors last week, imposing a fine of £769, along with £90 in court costs and a £308 victim surcharge.
Joshua has vowed to be more responsible moving forward, stating,
“I deeply regret the offense and am committed to being more responsible in the future.”
