Flight disruptions loom over Nigeria as aviation workers announce plans for a nationwide strike on August 21, 2024. The action is in response to the Federal Government’s ongoing 50% deduction from the internally generated revenue of key aviation agencies, a move that workers argue jeopardizes the safety of passengers and the industry’s functionality.
In a letter titled
“Save Aviation From Collapse,” dated August 14, 2024, and released to journalists on Thursday, August 15, the unions stated, “All workers of the NCAA, FAAN, NAMA, NiMet, NCAT, and NSIB, joined by the solidarity of all aviation workers, are hereby directed to embark on peaceful protests at all airports nationwide on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, to demand the discontinuation of the deduction of 50 percent from the internally generated revenue of the agencies mentioned above through exemption.”
The unions have directed all state councils, women’s commissions, youth councils, and branches of their unions nationwide to fully mobilize their members for optimum compliance with the strike directive.
In this critical safety activity grinding to a halt under financial constraints, aviation workers emphasize the urgency of addressing the revenue cuts to ensure the continued safety and operation of the industry.
