A heated debate in São Paulo turned violent when mayoral candidate and news anchor, Jose Luiz Datena, attacked his opponent, Pablo Marçal, with a metal chair in an inappropriate manner.
The shocking incident occurred during a live broadcast, leaving Marçal with a fractured rib and a dislocated finger, putting him in severe pain.
He was rushed to the hospital after experiencing difficulty breathing after the incident that transpired between the two parties.
Tensions escalated after Marçal repeatedly brought up past sexual harassment allegations against Datena; despite those claims being retracted, he still kept on pushing.
Datena, trailing in the polls with just 6%, accused Marçal of turning the debate into a spectacle, making it into a personal affair, making a more difficult and unconducive environment.
Unable to contain his anger, Datena slammed a chair into Marçal’s back, causing serious injuries all over his body, which was a result of his mismanaging his anger.
The violent act has thrown São Paulo’s mayoral race into turmoil, with Marçal comparing the attack to past assassination attempts on political figures.
“Why is there so much hate?” Marcel was questioned on social media.
Calls for punishment or fines against Datena are growing as the Brazilian public condemns the outburst ahead of the October mayoral elections that are set to occur.
