The Edo State Ministry of Health has declared a cholera outbreak, confirming six cases as of September 5.
Dr. Stephenson Ojeifo, Director of Public Health, revealed that out of 40 suspected cases, six have tested positive following confirmatory tests from the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja.
While no new cases have been reported, Ojeifo emphasized the importance of preventive measures to halt the spread of the disease, especially in the affected areas of Egor, Uhunmwonde, and Ikpoba Okha.
In response, the state government has activated health facilities at both the grassroots and referral levels.
Ojeifo stated, “We are activating all measures to address the outbreak we are currently facing,” adding that major hospitals like the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and others are designated as referral centers for severe cases.
He also urged citizens to avoid self-medication and report suspected cases promptly, advising,
“Individuals experiencing symptoms such as watery stools and diarrhea should seek immediate hospital treatment.”
The public has been encouraged to maintain good hygiene and sanitation practices to prevent further spread.
The Ministry of Health’s proactive stance underscores the government’s dedication to safeguarding public health.
“We are doing everything possible to ensure that this outbreak is contained swiftly, and we urge the public to cooperate fully,” Ojeifo added.
