Former President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that the Edo State governorship election held on September 21, 2024, demonstrates that technology alone cannot resolve Nigeria’s electoral challenges.
Speaking at an event organized by the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) in Abuja, Jonathan emphasized that while technology is often hailed as a solution, it is the mindset of those using it that poses the real problem.
He expressed concern over the manipulation of technology by corrupt individuals.
“Without the human mind ready to do what is right, if we bring the technology, they will manipulate it,” Jonathan remarked.
He added that Nigeria’s electoral issues stem from the intense struggle for leadership, which is often the root of conflict across the country.
“When you look at what causes conflict in Africa, most cases are a struggle for leadership, contestation for power.”
Moreover, the former president argued that the notion of politics being inherently dirty is flawed, noting that it is the people involved in politics who make it dirty.
“Politics is not dirty, but the people that play politics come to it with their dirty minds, dirty hearts, and dirty character,” he explained, stressing the need for a change in mindset to foster a culture of peace in Nigeria.
