The Enugu State Government has intensified its efforts to combat crime by demolishing a mansion in Amaebo Owelli Autonomous Community, Awgu Local Government Area, linked to kidnapping operations.
According to Hon. Uche Anya, Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, the building had been used as a hideout for kidnappers who tortured victims while demanding ransoms.
The decision to demolish the property follows a kidnapping incident in May 2024, where a victim was filmed at gunpoint within the premises.
Moreover, the government’s action is part of a broader strategy to eradicate criminality and is in line with Section 315 of the Enugu Criminal Code Law, which mandates the demolition of properties connected to crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery.
“What you see here today is the continuation of the war of the Enugu State Government against all manner of criminality,” said Anya, stressing that landlords are now responsible for any illegal activities on their properties.
Furthermore, previous demolitions in Ogbeke Nike and Nkwubor Nike have resulted in the recovery of significant arms and ammunition, signaling the government’s firm stance against crime.
The Enugu State Government remains committed to ensuring the safety of its citizens, and more demolitions are expected as part of their ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
