An explosion, suspected to be from dynamite, hit the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in the early hours of October 5, destroying parts of the building, including windows, gates, and the security house.
Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident. APC faction chairman, Tony Okocha, who spoke with Channels TV, alleged that the attack was politically motivated and linked the incident to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s earlier threats regarding the local government election.
“About 3:20 am, some gun-trotting young men with explosives came here, dropped the first explosive, and later returned to burn the structure,” Okocha explained.
He further accused political opponents of attempting to annihilate and embarrass their faction.
“Is the APC secretariat here any voting unit? It was deliberate to see how they can decimate us,” he added.
Meanwhile, voting commenced in many polling centers around Port Harcourt City, with police authorities stating they would not provide security, citing a court order.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), however, insisted that the election would proceed as scheduled.
Authorities have yet to comment on the explosion, and a thorough investigation is being urged to prevent further threats to public safety and ensure a secure electoral process.
