In a decisive move to enhance financial accountability and ensure the proper use of public funds, Governor Kabiru Abba Yusuf of Kano State has directed the immediate closure of all bank accounts held by the state’s ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
The directive, issued during a meeting at the Government House with the Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service and heads of MDAs, is part of the governor’s broader effort to centralize and harmonize the state’s financial management in line with the Kano State MDA Revenue Harmonization Law of 2016.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the closure of these accounts is crucial for ensuring that all government revenues are fully accounted for and utilized to support Kano State’s development goals.
“I am directing the Accountant-General of the state to urgently issue a circular to all MDAs to comply with the provisions of the Kano State MDA Revenue Harmonization Law of 2016,” he stated.
The governor also instructed that all money deposit banks and financial institutions immediately close the existing MDA bank accounts and transfer the balances to a newly established internally generated revenue (IGR) account, which will be overseen by the Accountant-General.
This measure is intended to prevent the mismanagement of funds and to ensure that resources are transparently and effectively used for the benefit of the people of Kano State.
Governor Yusuf assured citizens, particularly taxpayers, that the centralized funds will be dedicated to improving key sectors such as water and sanitation, health, education, and agricultural development.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to the continued development and betterment of the state, stressing that financial discipline is essential for achieving these objectives.
