“I Did Everything for Nigeria, Managed Affairs Accurately,” Obasanjo Declares

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has asserted that during his tenure, he effectively managed Nigeria’s affairs and made significant strides in the country’s economic health. 

 Speaking at a recent lecture in Lagos, Obasanjo reflected on his presidency from 1999 to 2007, proudly stating that he can “beat his chest” and declare that he did everything he needed to do for the nation. 

 He highlighted his success in securing debt relief and boosting Nigeria’s reserves, saying,

 “I took over the affairs of Nigeria as elected president with N3.7 billion in reserves… and we got debt relief… I left with over N25 billion in excess crude and a reserve of over N45 billion.”

 Obasanjo also addressed the complexity of managing a diverse nation like Nigeria, emphasizing that while the country may be complex, it is not difficult to manage with honesty and transparency.

 “You must understand that Nigeria is a complex country. But Nigeria is not a difficult country to manage. 

 You have to be honest with yourself, Nigeria, and your God,” he remarked, offering a subtle nudge towards the current administration to prioritize accountability and effective governance.

 His statement comes as Nigeria continues to face economic challenges under the current administration. 

 Obasanjo’s reflections serve as a reminder of the importance of sound fiscal management, urging President Tinubu and his officials to revisit their approach to governance and strive for a more financially secure and transparent Nigeria.
