The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of a supernumerary (spy) police officer caught on tape making unauthorized political comments regarding the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial elections that will be held in the state.
A viral video showed the officer, employed by a private company, criticizing Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki and predicting retribution once his immunity expires, which could be life-threatening to his being.
In a statement, Police spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi clarified that the individual involved is not a regular officer of the force but a privately employed Spy Police Officer whose name is yet to be revealed and the organization he is working for.
Adejobi stressed, “Supernumerary Police Officers are private individuals trained for specific security functions, primarily within their place of employment.”.
He further noted that while they have political freedom, the officer’s actions were inappropriate while in uniform and acted in such an unruly way, causing disputes among the officials and society at large.
The officer has been arrested, and an investigation is underway to clarify the action that he has carried out in an undutiful way, which was about escalating but was thankfully handled by the police officers.
The police emphasized that the comments made do not reflect the views of the Nigeria Police Force, reaffirming their commitment to professionalism, neutrality, and the rule of law by the oath they have sworn since the very first day of the profession.
