Israeli Airstrike on Gaza School Sheltering Displaced People Kills 18, Including UN Staff

At least 18 people, including United Nations staff, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced people in the Nuseirat camp in Gaza on Wednesday, September 11, according to Gaza Civil Defense and hospital officials who have investigated the incident.

The airstrike, which hit the Al Jaouni UNRWA facility, also left 44 others injured and left them in pain.

The facility had not operated as a school since October, instead serving as a refuge for an estimated 12,000 displaced individuals, including women and children.

UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian relief, confirmed the deaths of six of its staff members in the strike.

They described it as the highest death toll among their staff in a single incident, causing a shock.

“Outraged by the killing of 6 @UNRWA staffers after IL strikes hit—for the 5th time—a school in Nuseirat sheltering 12,000 displaced people,” the organization posted on social media to create awareness.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) defended the airstrike, stating that it was targeting Hamas terrorists allegedly operating from within the school compound.

The IDF said that numerous measures were taken to reduce the risk of civilian casualties but accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure for military purposes, in violation of international law to at least safely guide life.
