Former Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has revealed that stress and pressure were the primary reasons behind his decision to step down from his role after 22 months in charge of coaching the Super Eagles.
The Portuguese coach, who led Nigeria to second place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), chose not to renew his contract after it expired in February, citing fatigue from the demanding position and nature of the job.
“I decided that when I finished AFCON, I would leave.
I had put too much effort into my job, and it was too much stress,” Peseiro told SABC Sport.
In spite of the support from his family and players, Peseiro said he felt it was time to move on; even if the Super Eagles had won the tournament, there was just a need for it.
Peseiro, who previously coached Venezuela, described the Super Eagles job as “special” but acknowledged the need to prioritize his well-being as an act of discipline.
“Nigeria was an amazing job, with good players.
We played very well in the AFCON, but I grew fatigued,” he stated.
Currently, without a job, Peseiro is waiting for the right project and has declined multiple offers from clubs in South Africa, Europe, and Brazil for the sake of his well-being and peace.
