The Lagos State Government, on Thursday, August 16, demolished several houses constructed on the canal along the System 157 – Orchid Road – Eti Osa drainage channels.
The action was part of efforts to alleviate flooding and improve drainage systems in anticipation for the rainy season.
According to the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the demolition occurred after extensive discussions with the affected property owners. Wahab stated,
“After several months of stakeholders engagements with property owners built on Systems 156 and 157 drainage path, the agreements to implement the agreed redesigned plan which were not honored/neglected by the community, the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources commenced removal of illegal structures built on the canal along the System 157 – Orchid Road – Eti Osa drainage channels to deflood the area.”
The government emphasized the necessity of these actions to prevent flooding and ensure the convenience and safety of residents during the rainy season.
In addition, With these structures removed, the state anticipates a significant improvement in the flow of water through the drainage channels.
