Lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has criticized Nigerians for their passive response to the recent hike in petrol prices, following news that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has increased the pump price to N1,031 in Abuja.
The activist expressed his frustration at the lack of public outcry and protest over the steep price rise, which has significantly impacted the cost of living to be moreover bearing.
“Fuel is now N1,030, but nobody wants to chase clout by protesting. Everybody is waiting for everyone to start a protest,” Adeyanju lamented.
He pointed out that Nigerians seem unwilling to take action against the government, even as they face daily economic struggles caused by these policies.

However, Adeyanju acknowledged the deep-rooted fear many citizens have of retaliation from the government.
“Nobody wants to lose their life,” he said, noting the public’s hesitation to protest due to concerns for safety.
He further suggested that the government, having grown indifferent to the people’s suffering, has ignored their voices, leaving the public to bear the brunt of rising costs without recourse.
Adeyanju urged citizens to continue working hard to support themselves in the face of governmental failures.
