The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has expressed its intention to pursue legal action following Nigeria’s sudden withdrawal from the scheduled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, citing concerns over the Super Eagles’ treatment at Al Abaq Airport.
The Nigerian team, which had been stranded for over 13 hours without access to basic necessities, withdrew from the match due to safety concerns, leading to heightened tensions between both football federations.
In a statement released on Monday, October 14, the LFF accused the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) of mishandling the situation, claiming that Nigeria had failed to cooperate in organizing both legs of the fixture.
The LFF emphasized that “incidents beyond their control” should not be seen as justifications for Nigeria’s withdrawal, as they had faced even worse conditions in the first leg in Nigeria.
“The Libyan Football Federation condemns the measures taken by the Nigerian Football Federation by refusing to play,” the LFF statement read.
Meanwhile, the LFF has called for all legal measures to protect the interests of the Libyan national team, stressing that the NFF’s actions caused confusion and negatively impacted the AFCON qualifier schedule.
With both federations now in disagreement, it is urged that the governments of Nigeria and Libya engage in dialogue to resolve the issue and prevent further escalation, ensuring that tensions do not impact the broader sporting relationship between the two nations.
