Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has come to the defense of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen amid his controversial outburst against former Super Eagles coach, Finidi George.
Osimhen, in a video earlier this year, lashed out at Finidi for questioning his commitment to the national team, leading to calls for his punishment.
However, despite the controversy, Osimhen went on to score in Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Benin on Saturday, September 7.

Mikel, in his recent comments, explained that Osimhen felt disrespected after Finidi allegedly failed to protect him in a private conversation.
Mikel acknowledged that while Osimhen’s approach may not have been the best, he had the right to express his frustration.
“Maybe the way he did it wasn’t the best, but he had the right to speak out. I have nothing against Victor [Osimhen] for that, and knowing your worth isn’t arrogance,” Mikel said.
The former Chelsea star emphasized that respect in a team setting is crucial for unity, urging for mutual respect between players and coaches to prevent discord.
Osimhen’s frustration, Mikel pointed out, arose from feeling unjustly treated, and it was only fair that he defended himself.
The situation highlights the importance of open communication and respect within a team to maintain harmony and ensure collective success.
