Reno Omokri has sparked controversy after sharing photos of himself with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Independence Day.
The post captioned “Spending Independence Day with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
May God bless Nigeria,”
triggered mixed reactions from Nigerians, many of whom recalled Omokri’s past criticisms of Tinubu, particularly accusations linking him to drug-related activities in the U.S. during the early 1990s.
Some Nigerians expressed confusion, questioning whether Omokri’s appearance with Tinubu signaled a shift in his stance and speculated that he might be poised to take over the role of SA to the President on Media and Publicity, following Ajuri Ngelale’s resignation.
“What changed?” many asked, with one user recalling Omokri’s previous statement: “Nigeria cannot have a KNOWN DRUG LORD as her President. God forbid.
I also challenge Tinubu to take a drug test.”
These comments have led to accusations of hypocrisy, as Omokri was once one of Tinubu’s loudest critics.
However, others took a more celebratory tone, with some supporters congratulating Omokri in advance and expressing hope that his presence at the Villa signified an imminent political appointment.
Meanwhile, critics argue that this meeting is another example of Nigeria’s political elite demonstrating inconsistency and self-interest while issues affecting everyday citizens remain unresolved.
“The government is more focused on securing personal gains than addressing the real suffering of Nigerians,” one commenter noted.
