NANS The National Association of Nigerian Students has reaffirmed its plans to proceed with a nationwide protest on September 15th in response to the recent fuel price hike.
Senate President Henry Okuomo, speaking on Channels TV emphasized the hardship students and Nigerians are facing due to the increase in fuel prices.
He stated, “We are hitting the street hard… to save the Nigerian people from this undue stress and suffering being put upon them by the government.”
This announcement comes after conflicting reports earlier this week, where NANS President Afeez Akinteye denied any plans for a strike, calling for an investigation into the misinformation.
In response, Okuomo clarified that the association represents over 40 million Nigerian students and is committed to ensuring their voices are heard during this period of economic difficulty.
“Nigerians are facing hardship, and now the government has increased fuel prices again. This has affected us as students,” he said.
NANS also condemned the use of the association’s name in spreading false rumors, urging the government and security agencies to address the issue.
They stressed the need to maintain the integrity of NANS, ensuring that the association is not used to spread misinformation or incite unrest.
“We categorically dissociate ourselves from any such plans or intentions,” Akinteye added, calling for those behind the false reports to be identified and held accountable.
