The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued permits to several key organizations, including Golden Penny Power Limited and MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, for the generation of mini-grid electricity.
The permits, granted in the first quarter of 2024, authorize these entities to generate power primarily for their own consumption, a strategy designed to ensure consistent operations and prevent disruptions in production.
This initiative is expected to increase the availability of various food products and essential goods while creating job opportunities across the country.
Golden Penny Power Limited has been licensed to build six off-grid gas plants across Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River states, with a total capacity of 100 MW, which is crucial for food production and manufacturing.
MTN Communications, on the other hand, has been granted permits for four captive generation plants in Lagos, with a combined capacity of 15.94 MW. By securing their power supply, these companies aim to maintain continuous operations.
“Captive power generation permits are vital for ensuring that businesses can sustain their operations without relying on the national grid,” the commission noted.
Additionally, the NERC has awarded permits to other companies, including SweetCo Foods Limited, African Steel Mills Nigeria Limited, and West African Ceramics Limited, to generate their own power.
The commission’s actions reflect a broader effort to empower businesses with reliable electricity, thereby reducing the risk of production halts that could lead to shortages of food and essential products.
