Kiingi Tuheitia, New Zealand’s revered Maori king, has passed away at the age of 69, leaving behind a profound legacy that will be deeply felt by his people and the nation.
His death, confirmed on Friday, August 30, comes shortly after the celebration of his 18th year on the throne.
Tuheitia, who had been in the hospital recovering from heart surgery, died peacefully surrounded by his wife, Makau Ariki, and their children.

Britain’s King Charles III, New Zealand’s formal head of state, expressed his shock at the news, having recently spoken to King Tuheitia by phone.
He remarked, “Kiingi Tuheitia was deeply committed to forging a strong future for Maori and Aotearoa-New Zealand, founded upon culture, traditions, and healing, which he carried out with wisdom and compassion.”
