The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning of a nationwide strike if the police proceed with detaining its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
The threat emerged after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Tuesday morning, August 20, at the NLC headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting was called following the police invitation for Ajaero’s questioning in connection with allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and other serious charges.

During the meeting, the NEC expressed unwavering loyalty to Ajaero, emphasizing the unity and trust within the organization.
The NEC agreed that Ajaero should comply with the police’s invitation but instructed their legal adviser to seek an extension to allow adequate time for preparation.
This reflects the strong bond between Ajaero and his followers, who have rallied in support of their leader.
Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, the NLC Deputy President, declared, “If the police take actions contrary to our expectations, such as detaining Ajaero, the union will not hesitate to mobilize a nationwide strike.”
The NEC’s decision highlights the solidarity and spirit of oneness within the NLC, a sentiment fostered by Ajaero’s leadership style, which has been characterized by openness and fairness.
The Congress has called on all affiliates and state councils to begin mobilizing members for potential industrial action, stressing that they will not be intimidated by what they perceive as a politically motivated investigation.
“We stand firm in our resolve to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law in our beloved country,” the NEC declared.
The NLC’s resolve to defend its president highlights their commitment to justice, with the NEC urging the general populace to stand in solidarity with the union in this critical moment.
