The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has begun enforcing its new policy, barring polytechnic and monotechnic graduates without proof of completing the mandatory one-year Industrial Training (IT) from entering orientation camps.
This directive, aimed at ensuring that graduates are proficient in both theoretical and practical aspects of their education, was announced earlier this year and is now being strictly implemented as new batches of prospective corps members arrive at camps nationwide.
NYSC officials across the country, including in states like Lagos, Osun, Niger, and Kano, have confirmed that graduates without IT certificates are not being registered for the one-year national youth service.
Mrs. Caroline Lembu, the acting Director of Press and Public Relations for the NYSC, clarified that presenting an IT certificate is a prerequisite for HND holders, emphasizing,
“That is one of the documents they are required to present at the camp.” This move, according to Lembu, is not to reject students but to ensure they meet the necessary requirements to participate in the program.
The NYSC’s strict adherence to this policy highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing the credibility of Nigeria’s education system.
Mrs. Funmi Okundaye, the NYSC Public Relations Officer in Osun State, echoed this sentiment, stating,
“It is a national policy to sanitize the education sector. We sent those who don’t have IT letters back home to bring it. It is part of the registration materials they must bring to camp.”
This initiative aims to reinforce the importance of practical training and ensure that graduates are fully prepared for the challenges of the workforce.
