Ogun REC, Niyi Ijalaye, Passes Away After Abuja Meeting

Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State, tragically passed away on Monday, August 19, after collapsing in his hotel room following a meeting at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting, which was presided over by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, focused on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as discussions on seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.

Although neither the commission nor Ijalaye’s family have officially announced the news, a source within INEC confirmed his death.

According to the source, Ijalaye was actively involved and in good spirits during the crucial meeting, but the stress and demands of his role may have taken a toll on his health.

Upon returning to his hotel room, Ijalaye collapsed and subsequently passed away, highlighting the immense pressure faced by those in political positions, particularly those of advanced age.

Given the physically and mentally demanding nature of such roles, it raises concerns about the need for age-specific regulations for holding political office.

However, political responsibilities often involve critical decision-making and considerable stress; ensuring that such positions are held by individuals who can manage these demands is essential for the well-being of those in service and the effective functioning of governance.

Ijalaye’s untimely death serves as a somber reminder of the demands of public office and the significance of taking age and health into account when appointing political officials.
