Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has been released after a brief arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) upon his return to Nigeria on Sunday morning, September 15, as recorded.
Sowore, the convener of the “Revolution Now” movement, had revealed his arrest on social media platform X shortly after landing in the country, which would have been so shocking and unexpected to him.
His detention, however, was short-lived, as he was released just 20 minutes later after the incident.
In a post shared on his X account, Sowore expressed relief at regaining his freedom.
“I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me,” he wrote, using the hashtag #RevolutionNow to mark the occasion.
While the reasons for Swore’s brief detention were not explicitly disclosed, his recent activism and political movements may have been factors considered for the action.
This incident follows previous run-ins with the authorities, as he has been an outspoken critic of the Nigerian government.
His supporters continue to call for transparency regarding the incident to ensure accountability and prevent such detentions in the future.
Many are concerned that these detentions may be politically motivated attempts to stifle dissent.
