Thailand’s parliament voted on Friday, August 16, for Paetongtarn Shinawatra to become the country’s next prime minister.
The 37-year-old member of Thailand’s most prominent political dynasty received 319 votes in the House of Representatives after being nominated as the sole candidate by her Pheu Thai party’s ruling coalition.
Her appointment comes just two days after the Constitutional Court removed former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office.

Paetongtarn is set to be the second female prime minister in Thailand’s history, following her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra.
In conversation with reporters at her party headquarters in Bangkok, Paetongtarn expressed gratitude towards her supporters, stating that she felt “honored” by the decision and promised to
“do her best in this position.”
Her appointment is pending endorsement by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, after which she will officially take office and appoint a cabinet.
Paetongtarn’s ascension to power represents a significant moment for female leadership in Thailand, highlighting a shift towards greater representation in prominent political positions.
