The Ogun State Police Command has arrested five individuals for allegedly killing a fisherman, Segun Sikiru, in Iwopin town, Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Saheed Mureni, Afeez Mureni, Saheed Taidi, Thompson Samuel, and Ogoji Olorunwa, were reportedly caught stealing from Sikiru’s fish trap before fatally assaulting him with a bamboo stick and dumping his body in a lagoon.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the suspects were apprehended after the deceased’s family reported the incident.
Sikiru and his two sons had gone fishing when they caught the suspects tampering with their fish trap.
“When Sikiru tried to raise an alarm, he was attacked and struck in the chest. His sons managed to escape, but the suspects discarded his unconscious body into the lagoon,” Odutola explained.
The victim’s body has been recovered and taken to a mortuary in Ijebu-Ode.
However, the suspects are currently in police custody, and an investigation into the murder is ongoing to get more detailed information on what really transpired to make the issue as tragic as this.
The incident has sparked calls for harsher penalties against those involved in such violent acts, as it reflects the growing concerns over theft and violence in local communities, for which government intervention is really needed.
