The Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) successfully thwarted a suicide attempt by a 59-year-old man identified as Yemi, who tried to jump into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge on Friday, September 20, 2024, as a result of the economic instability.
According to the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Yemi, a resident of Ilasa, Lagos, was reportedly overwhelmed by the financial and personal challenges he has been facing due to the fact that the economic situation is not encouraging, and if you double your hustle, two things won’t improve.
“At about 1200 hrs today, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) bike riders on routine patrol on the Third Mainland Bridge prevented a man from jumping into the lagoon.
The man, one Yemi, aged 59 of Ilasa, Lagos, stated that he was overwhelmed by challenges,” the police spokesperson stated and confirmed.
The Commander of the RRS, CSP Shola Jejeloye, provided counsel to the distressed man and ensured that he was placed in protective custody while awaiting the arrival of his family to ensure his safety and make sure that he doesn’t go back to that same act he wanted to execute as a result of the overwhelming situation and frustration.
The incident highlights the deepening struggles faced by Nigerians due to the nation’s ongoing economic challenges, leaving many feeling hopeless and putting them in an unhealthy state of mind, and can cause some of their lives to be cut short.
