The U.S. Secret Service has confirmed that it is aware of a controversial social media post by billionaire Elon Musk in which he mentioned no one was “even trying” to assassinate President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.
Though Musk later deleted the post and claimed it was a joke, his comments have drawn widespread criticism, with many X users accusing him of inciting violence against top U.S. officials, which according to his statement seemed so.
The White House responded with a strong condemnation, calling Musk’s rhetoric “irresponsible.”
A statement from the administration emphasized that “violence should never be joked about or encouraged,” adding, “There should be no place for political violence in our country.”
Musk’s post came just hours after a suspected assassination attempt on Donald Trump at his Florida golf course, intensifying reactions.
The Secret Service has stated it will investigate all threats related to its protectees but refrained from providing specific comments on Musk’s post.
Musk later acknowledged his misstep, tweeting, “Turns out that jokes are way less funny if people don’t know the context,” in an attempt to clarify his statements.
However, many are calling for greater accountability to prevent potential threats from escalating due to careless comments.
