The Super Eagles, led by captain William Troost-Ekong, have expressed their intent to boycott the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya following what they described as “disgraceful” treatment upon arrival in Libya.
After defeating Libya 1-0 in Uyo, Nigeria, the team was scheduled to play the return leg in Benghazi on October 15.
However, they were held at the airport for over 12 hours, denied entry into the country, and left without food or water.
Troost-Ekong, speaking on behalf of the team, shared their frustration, stating,
“We have called for our Nigerian government to intervene and rescue us.
As the captain, together with the team, we have decided that we will NOT play this game,” he stated.
He highlighted the disrespectful behavior of the Libyan authorities, who rescinded the team’s approved landing and subjected them to unsafe conditions.
Moreover, the captain emphasized that the Super Eagles have always treated visiting teams with respect and expect the same in return.
“Mistakes happen, but these things on purpose have nothing to do with international football,” he said.
The team has urged CAF to investigate the situation while urging the Nigerian government to prioritize the safety and dignity of its athletes in such situations.
