Tinubu Did Not Extend IGP’s Tenure, Only Approved Standard Four-Year Term – Police Clarifies

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not extend the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, contrary to some circulating reports.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 6, Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi emphasized that the President simply followed the law by approving a four-year term for the IGP, as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Adejobi pointed out that the confusion stems from misinformation circulating on social media, which falsely claimed that IGP Egbetokun’s tenure had been extended.

“What President Bola Tinubu approved for the IGP is not an extension of tenure, but rather the proper application of the law governing the office of the IGP,” Adejobi stated.

The Police also highlighted that the IGP’s four-year term was clearly stipulated in the appointment letter, issued after his confirmation by the Police Council, and there is no need for any lobbying for an extension.

The statement noted, “The ongoing circulation of false information is the handiwork of pessimists and mischief-makers.”

Additionally, the police urged the public to disregard the false reports and rely on official channels for accurate information.

They also warned that spreading misinformation can cause unnecessary tension and undermine the efforts of the police in maintaining law and order.
