The Delta State Police Command has arrested two women for allegedly stealing a three-day-old baby and attempting to sell the child.
The arrest followed a tip-off from a tricycle rider who reported suspicious activity to the police after hearing a conversation between the suspects about a payment related to the baby.
The women, identified as Tessi Ikechukwu and Lauretta Akomen, were taken into custody at the Ekpan Police Station in Delta State on October 1.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the investigation revealed that Lauretta Akomen had purchased the baby for ₦2 million from a traditional home in Port Harcourt, where teenage girls are reportedly harbored, impregnated, and their babies sold to individuals seeking children.
“She also admitted to taking drugs to make her appear pregnant as part of the scheme,” Edafe stated.
The women were intercepted after one of them handed the baby to the other in the tricycle, allegedly after a deal had been completed.
The arrest highlights the growing desperation caused by economic instability.
However, despite the financial struggles many face, the police have emphasized the need for accountability.
Edafe added, “The suspects are in custody, and a manhunt for their accomplices is ongoing.”
The case highlights the need for stricter enforcement of laws and government intervention to address underlying issues contributing to such illegal activities.
